crews are doing. how's it going? >> reporter: they are working hard. i spoke with a crew member a few moments ago who said four or five transformers are affected. i want to show you right now, there's a lot of work going on in the noe valley neighborhood to try to turn that power back on. right now 100 customers are affected. pg&e says lightning didn't directly hit the transformers here but it hit near hoffman avenue. now customers on fountain street, grandview avenue are also affected. for or five transformers were hit or were actually shut down and that's what caused the outage. now, if you look at some video, you can see that crews are busy working. the challenge involved multiple transformers so pg&e had to count how many customers were connected to each transformer. back out live again, you see lots of crews working here that pg&e crew member told me they are trying to get more crews to

get out here to restore power as quickly as possible. still no estimated time on when they can restore power to the area. but that crew member told me he is thinking around 8:00 -- [ signal breakup ] -- this morning. we spoke to a neighbor who lives down the street. she heard the lightning and it sounded like a big boom and after that, all the lights were out. now it's going to affect her family because her husband actually works from home. we'll give you more on that in the next half hour. live in noe valley, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. sure in the bay area today. and -- showers in the bay area today. with cold temperatures, that could mean snow on the highest peaks, definitely in the sierra. squaw valley could get a foot of snow. snow levels are low at 5,000 feet. and that could drop a little, as well. the falling snow caught many drivers off guard. a number of travelers heading up and down interstate 80

thinking they would beat the storm, but it hit earlier than expected. tow truck driver mick hodges says the snow came down so quickly, caltrans didn't have time to set up chain controls in truckky. >> they let cars through without chains and then it started snowing real heavy so there's cars on the highway with no chains on and they were crashing. >> a break in the storm left roads very slick and wet. still, chain controls remain in effect, upsetting some truck drivers forced to buy chains because they didn't have them and that costs a lot. >> it does. snow up there but rain down here, lawrence. i was driving on the way to work today had to dodge a couple of puddles in the road. >> wet out there, lightning strikes. we are not done, we have more showers, but it's moving a little further to the south throughout the morning hours. let's take a look at our high- def doppler radar. possibility of some more isolated thunderstorms and don't be surprised to see whale that too.

a closer look in toward morgan hill. we are seeing some pretty good rainfall coming down there along the 101 into the santa cruz mountains so watch out for that early on this morning. then it becomes more widely scattered at least through the middle of the day. and then we're not done with it yet. you can see behind the wave moving through now we are seeing showers but on the back side a little bit of clearing. we have another wave that's going to push down into the bay area. temperatures are chilly outside. 30s now, mid-30s in santa rosa, 46 degrees in san jose, 45 in san francisco. average temperatures usually in the 60s and low 70s. by the afternoon as much as 13 degrees below average in san jose. about 56 degrees is all we are going to get to in san francisco. get out the cold weather clothes, elizabeth. >> i know. looks cold. all right. thanks, lawrence. outside right now, we haven't seen anything too unusual. no huge accidents. we did have one earlier traffic alert actually in this area through milpitas. it is now clear. all lanes are open. but obviously, you can see from our live traffic cameras and

from lawrence's doppler radar that everything is still a little slick out there. so this is a live look across the golden gate. looks like they have reopened some more southbound 101 lanes in the commute direction. we also have some bart delays, 10 to 15 minutes on the richmond line in all directions. all other bart lines are on time. every other form. mass transit good to go. and, of course, grab your chains. we have chain requirements this morning on every major road up to the sierra including interstate 80, trucks are being screened at applegate, grab your chains if you are on highway 50 or highway 88. that is "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. well, people in new york camping out in the cold. they are at a san jose food pantry that's giving away thousands of food boxes for the holidays. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is at sacred heart community service where that line just continues to grow behind you, anne. >> reporter: yeah. you could call them brave santa's elves because they are here it make sure their families have a wonderful holiday season. you can see some of the campers

here. it is cold and rainy and a lot of these people have been here since yesterday evening. they are here in san jose to sign up for holiday help. i'm here with jay the director of sacred heart. this is just the signup. this isn't even to get your stuff. >> this is the signup day as everyone -- many people are asleep around us right now. today they will sign up to receive thanksgiving and christmas food, plus toys for christmas. they are all going to leave today with a scheduled appointment to come and pick up the food and the toys. >> reporter: we all know the economy has been rough. what kind of increasing need have you seen over the last few years? >> we actually expect to see the same number last year which was a record number the reason is it reflects the poverty numbers within our county. last year, it was 10.6%. it's still at 10.6%.

there's a lot of people in need out there post-recession so even as the economy gets better that's mostly high-end employment that's changing for high-tech, high education jobs. a number of people in line starting at 11:00 yesterday morning, they are struggling to get full-time jobs with benefits. the first person in line they have really been hurting because of medical issues within their family and can't get the assets together. >> reporter: jay pecot with sacred heart community service. i spoke with a lot of these people in line as well and they are so appreciative of what they are getting. sacred heart runs on donations so wonderful charity. that's what we have life for you at sacred heart before the doors open. anne makovec, cbs 5. police are searching for two men who reportedly kidnapped a woman in a violent

robbery attempt in walnut creek. she said two men abducted hers wednesday night as she left work. she was tied up and they drove her to various atms forcing her to withdraw money before abandoning her in the oakland hymns. she freed herself and called police. oakland police released a sketch of a suspect in an attempted kidnapping. the man in his 20s blonde hair tried to grab a 14-year-old girl on 103 avenue monday afternoon. she got away. san jose firefighters made quick work this morning of a school fire on the city's east side. they were called about 1 a.m. to saint thomas more school a private catholic campus on south white road. a dispatcher said the fire was out and the scene was cleared within an hour and a half. there's some damage to a room at the school. investigators say there's

nothing suspicious about the fire. the cause is unclear video from a neighbor shows a san francisco house going up in flames in the monterey heights neighborhood. the neighbor tells us the house had been abandoned for many years and was being renovated. no one was there when the fire started. flames also scorched the wall of a nearby house. this took nearly an hour and a half to put the fire out. investigators are still looking for the cause. a man injured during a giants world series celebration has died. the victim has been identified as 37-year-old sean moffett. he lives in san francisco. he told his roommate on october 28 that several people had been surrounded him on haight street, hit him in the head with a metal object. he died two days later at a hospital. police are asking for witnesses to come forward. a power and rare has allows nogenic is one of the drugs found during a silicon valley raid. search warrants were served at apartments on bush street in downtown mountain view. officers found weapons and drugs. there was meth and heroin and a

lab for making a powerful hallucinogenic called dimethyl tryptamine or dmt. it was tips from neighbors that led police to the apartments although the property owner said he didn't notice any problems. >> sometimes a little [ indiscernible ] i don't see anything illegal or fighting or something crazy going on. >> police say this is the third dmt lab found in california. three suspects were arrested and more arrests are expected. officers say the dmt being processed could have sold for tens of thousands of dollars. in his first address since his re-election president obama will urge lawmakers to work together and prevent that so- called "fiscal cliff." mr. obama set to deliver a speech later this morning. if congressional democrats and the republicans don't reach a budget deal by year's end the bush-era tax cuts will expire and deep across-the-board cuts will kick in. vice president joe biden and

drivers off guard today. cbs reporter sean bennett in nyack with the conditions rt now. mick hodges tow truck driver "and they let a bunch of cas through without any chains d then it started sn here's all thes snowstorm in the sierra caught drivers off guard. we see it snowing there. we can see you breath. must be cold in nyack. >> reporter: very cold. 27 degrees in nyack a short distance from blue canyon. snow falling in the last several minutes. if you are heading toward the sierra this morning, caltrans has the chain control in effect. they lit flares in the last 20 minutes making sure you stop here or you won't be able to

continue over the summit. truckers have been lining up chaining up. as far as the snow a good amount fell yesterday. you can see how many inches caltrain has been plowing. video from nyack about 35, 40 minutes or so ago but trucks continuing to chain up. a lot of them learning for the first time here on the side of the road at 4:00 in the morning. it's freezing cold out here. we have seen different stories. but trucks are being chained at applegate. that's further down 80 back down toward sacramento. they just want to make sure that the truckers have the chains. nyack of course the chain control in effect all the way to the nevada state line. so very cold up here. i know that the weekend is about to start in a few hours so if you are coming up be safe. but it is very, very cold.

frank, michelle? >> all right. sean bennett live in nyack, thank you. i would imagine the ski resorts are saying, hooray, thanksgiving is coming, we have snow. and we have snow in the bay area, too. >> we could have snow on our peaks. but a lot of guys up there love to see the snow for thanksgiving and they are going to get some of it now. if it stays cold enough they can make snow, too. scattered showers around the bay area. we have had some lightning and thunderstorms rolling through early on today reports of power outages because of that. now most of the focus shifting a little bit further to the south. you can see occasional lightning strike showing up on our radar here. it looks like we're not done with the rain although we may catch a little bit of a break. out the door it is a chilly start to the day. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. by the afternoon, it's going to stay very cool. highs only running in the 50s. and there's a chance of a shower maybe even a wandering thunderstorm rolling on through. so unsettled weather continues. the trough parked along the west coast. we have one wave of energy rolling through and then a

break with another one likely moving through later on today into tomorrow. so unseasonably cold some of the temperatures 13 degrees below average for this time of year. traveling across the country into the high country tough going. winter weather advisory likely to see snow down to 3,000 feet or so maybe another two to five inches across the higher peaks. how about this for temperatures? 58 degrees in livermore. that's it. about 56 in san francisco. 57 mountain view. the next couple of days the weather settles down although we could see a leftover shower early tomorrow morning but then drying out in the afternoon on saturday. lots of sunshine for sun, maybe some more rain though next tuesday and wednesday. elizabeth? >> and with rain comes snow up in the sierra as you just saw from that live report. we are going to show you again, this is actually a live look near truckee where of course there are chain requirements. we have the latest updated information on the requirements. interstate 80 from nyack to 7 miles east of truckee you will also need to bring your chains

on highway 50 near kyburz and chains required on 88, as well. let's go closer to home in the bay area. checking the bridges, we have rain and slick conditions on roads. so far good news no big huge problems because of it. no big hot spots. a live look at the commute direction. that's westbound. this is eastbound heading towards hayward. and both directions just about a 14-minute drive time between hayward and foster city. on the maps this is a live look at 880. word of a stall reported near high street. but it's not really causing much of a delay. you will notice the drive time still in the green. northbound 88015 minutes between 238 and the maze. otherwise, if you got a flight to catch trying to get out of town and not using the roads, you'red hadding towards sfo, this is a -- you're heading towards sfo, this is a live look at 101 looks good towards san bruno and continues to move well into san mateo. we have bart delays. still there on the richmond line an obstruction on the

lights turned back on. i want to show you pg&e crews are busy trying to repair the transformers and they have called out for more help. the good news that we have heard is that one transformer has been restored. but again, there's still a lot of work it go. let's see how many people have been affected. you can see right now, 100 customers still are lights out because of that lightning that hit near the transformer. it's affecting customers near hoffman avenue, fountain street and grandview avenue. and that caused about 4 or 5 transformers to shut down. this outage started right at around 1:12 this morning. and we spoke to one neighbor just a few moments ago and she described to us just how powerful that lightning strike was. >> it was almost as if a bomb was going off. there was a huge crash and my husband and i actually both woke up and went, whoa. what was that? >> reporter: and now you woke up and there's no -- >> we should have realized at the time because it was that loud that there wouldn't be any

power. clearly we have no power. >> reporter: crews have been working ever since. there is no estimated official time of restoration but pg&e says they are hoping for about 8 or 9 this morning. back out live you can see they are busy working trying to get the power back on in the neighborhood and frank and michelle, i was told the challenge was because it affected multiple transformers pg&e crews had to count how many customers were tied to each transformer before they knew officially how many people were affected. cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. it is 5:32. the weather has turned down right cold out there folks. we are expecting showers today possible snow on the highest peaks right here in the bay area. there's definitely snow in the sierra. you're looking live right now at highway 80 in truckee. it's slow going. they could get a foot of snow by the time the storm moves out. the snow level by the way down to about 5,000 feet. it could drop with the temperatures. the snow caught drivers off guard. many travelers up and down 80

thought they beat the storm but it hit early. a tow truck driver says the snow came down so suddenly and so fast, caltrans didn't have time to set up chain controls in truckee making for a sloppy commute through the mountains to say the least. >> no kidding. so in the mountains there's snow, down here there's rain. >> and maybe a little snow, too, right, lawrence. >> snow in the highest peaks so interesting weather overnight. what a change from a few days ago. record temperatures. now temperatures 13 degrees below average and we have showers. hi-def doppler picking up on some of the activity. you see a few more showers off the coastline. and toward the san jose area. we have some showers moving in that direction. occasional showers today, then some sunshine and dry weather. then maybe a few more showers. so we are going to keep things a little unsettled although we may catch a little bit of a dry slot between this wave of moisture moving through now. we have this behind it. that should help to clear us

out. there's more on the way just to the north. the temperatures very chilly outside this morning. only mid-30s in santa rosa. 42 san rafael, high this afternoon, keeping those only in the 50s. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> cold and wet. here's a live look outside to show you some of these traffic conditions in this weather. right now the northbound traffic that's the headlights in san jose especially close to the mckee exit it's already starting to bunch up. so kind of busy there. drivers should be taking it slow this morning. a few extra brake lights on the road pretty much everywhere you go. we haven't seen any huge accidents yet. let's go to our maps and talk about mass transit. first to mass transit they cleared what was ever on the tracks for bart near the richmond line. so now we are just seeing residual delays of about 5 minutes out of the richmond area. elsewhere if your commute takes you through sausalito, this is a live look 101 into san francisco. southbound 101 free and clear

towards the golden gate bridge. and we're closely watching this accident. this is a possible accident involving a big rig. the eastbound lanes of 780 approaching glen cove road. we don't know about lane closures but again a heads up. it's eastbound 780 where there's a possible big rig accident. look outside 880 the nimitz, no delay up towards downtown oakland. that is "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. an early-morning fire did some damage to a school in east san jose. the fire started about 1:00 a.m. at saint thomas more school. it's a catholic campus on south white road. we just got off the phone with a fire dispatcher to tells us the fire is out and the scene was cleared within an hour and a half. investigators say there's nothing suspicious about the fire although the cause is still unknown. a home being renovated in san francisco goes up in flames. take a look at this amazing video. a neighbor captures these images just moments after flames broke out last night in the monterey heights neighborhood. the neighbor tells us the house

had been abandoned for many years. no one was there when the fire started. flames also scorched the wall of a nearby house. they are still looking for the cause of that fire. well, about 100 people spent a cold night camping out in hopes of having happier holidays. >> they did. they're in line to get help with thanksgiving and christmas meals and some gifts as well. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in san jose at at sacred heart community service event. they were out all night in the rain, weren't this? >> >> reporter: that's right. as lawrence just told us, it is cold and it is wet out here. not a good night for camping. but it was a casualty of the cause for these people. they are lined up in front of sacred heart community service. they are signing up for holiday help this year, food for thanksgiving dinner and toys for christmas. sacred heart is expecting record numbers of people asking for help this year which is what they saw last year. thousands of people for each holiday, thanksgiving and christmas. people have been waiting in

7:30 wednesday night as she left her workplace at the shadelands business park. the men tied her up and drove her to various atms in the east bay, forcing her to withdraw money from her bank account before releasing her in the oakland hills. she freed herself and called 911. police released a composite sketch in a suspect in a kidnap attempt. a girl was walking along 103 avenue when a man tried to force her into a pickup in walnut creek. she got away. the suspect is in his 20s, tall, thin, blonde hair. second man also in the driver's seat of that pickup. a s.w.a.t. raid shuts down silicon valley drug labs. the number of police agencies served search warrants at apartments on bush street in downtown mountain view. tips from neighbors led them to the apartment complex. officers found weapons and drugs. there was meth and heroin and a

street. worries about gridlock in washington sent stocks tumbling again on thursday. the dow slid 121 points. the nasdaq lost 41. the dow has plunged more than 434 points in just the last two days. bp and attorneys are urging a federal judge to give final approval to a class action settlement. the blowout killed 11 rig workers and spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil in the gulf of alaska. bp predicts it will pay about $8 billion to resolve 100,000 claims. getting back to wall street, it's already pointing lower for the open. a lot of people waiting to hear president obama speak today to give comments about the "fiscal cliff" that's looming and what they will do. >> they have to get that in order in a big hurry. we were surprised. we both have iphones and i guess samsung has taken a bite out of apple.

they are more popular, the droid? >> yeah. samsung came out swinging. the world's largest mobile phone maker sold more than 18 million of its galaxy s3 smartphones in the 3rd quarter making it one of the fastest selling smartphones in the world. by comparison, apple sold more than 16 million iphones. but a research firm says apple sales still remain strong. we knew that. apple will be all right. >> do you still have the blackberry, ashley? >> reporter: you know it! rolling by you see shots like this taken from a piedmont backyard of hail coming down there fairly heavy. we had reports of hail scattered about the bay area and, of course, those lightning storms continuing to roll through overnight. and some power outages in south san francisco. weather unsettled. high-def doppler radar showing you showers outside right now but more widely scattered. down in parts of the south bay, that seems to be the focus right now. just to the north, milpitas, we are seeing some showers some pockets of moderate amounts of rainfall there, as well. and this will continue throughout the morning hours. then i think we'll catch a little bit of a break. here we go. temperatures in the 30s and 40s. a cool start to the day. by the afternoon, highs only going to be in the 50s. it will be brisk. there's a chance of a widely scattered shower, maybe even a thunderstorm rotating on through. and we're not done. we have more unsettled air behind the system. it's a lot of that cold air working its way out of the gulf of alaska. that's why temperatures are way down. then one more wave of moisture coming in late tonight and early tomorrow morning so maybe some leftover showers into

saturday morning. then it looks like we're done. let's time it out. this morning, scattered showers early on. then maybe catching a little bit of a break. but then as we get in toward nighttime and overnight, chance of more wandering showers rotating on through into early tomorrow morning. so after that looks like things setting down but these temperatures today cool for this time of the year about 13 degrees below average. 58 expected high in livermore. only 55 and brisk in pacifica. 56 in san francisco. and 56 in santa rosa. next couple of days, the temperatures warm up a little bit on saturday and sunday as we dry things out. next chance of stormy weather after that probably on tuesday. elizabeth? >> i know. weren't we just going to the beach a few days ago? what happened? now it's a winter wonderland out towards the sierra. look at this. here's a live look at truckee where, yes, there are chain requirements this morning on interstate 80 highway 50 and those chain requirements for highway 88 as well. chain requirements on 80 by the way from nyack to 70 miles east of truckee.

roads here closer to home, over at the bay bridge, starting to get busy but no delay. no major delays anyi watch maybe one or two cars deep in a couple. cash lanes. no metering lights. so that's why you look good up the incline toward treasure island. bart trying to recover obstruction on the tracks in richmond near the richmond station so they cleared it and now they are saying five- to ten-minute delays on the richmond line. ace, muni, caltrain, ferries, other mass transit so far good to go this morning. earlier flooding reports in livermore so heads up. we have a few brake lights on westbound 580 closer towards the dublin interchange but it's stop and go this morning from 205 out of tracy. really all the way through livermore. that's the drive time already in the yellow, 20 minutes right now but again drivers seem to be taking it slow no matter where you're off to. the roads are wet. eastbound 780 at glen cove road a possible big rig accident.

blocking one lane for a second and it's already clear. the road is back open. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. we want to take you out live show you some live pictures of a pretty large fire burning in southern california right now. when we show this live picture here this is in burbank. it's at a cigarette wholesaler that specializes in tobacco products. this fire started about 3:30 this morning. it started inside the building then spread to the attic compromising the roof. but you can see all of the crews out there. they are battling it from the outside apparently it's too dangerous to battle it from the inside. and they are also trying to keep it from spreading to other buildings. but you can see the crews are working out there to try and contain this fire. it appears to be a total loss at this point. we are going to continue to keep an eye on this fire. again, this is live in burbank. >> talk about a flammable product. you got cigarettes inside there. okay. it is 5:52 now.

the u.s. military is taking disciplinary action against a group of elite navy seals because of what they did for a bay area company. it involves a very realistic videogame called war fighter. electronics arts out of redwood city consulted with some current seal team 6 members the team that took down osama bin laden. 7 men have been reprimanded four others under investigation. other seals are in a movie called "act of valor" with the navy's approval. >> just there are seals that i think eight of them active duty navy seals that one may be out now that participated in this. it started off as a recruiting film. >> the navy isn't saying what kind of classified information was given to electronic arts. time now 5:52. how your choice of cell phone could be giving you allergies plus... >> usually 30, 35 minutes away but today about an hour and a half. >> they are calling it mall
